Wake Me Up Before You Rakugo

Perfect posture, smartly-dressed: If you were to meet Mangetsu (real name: Yamato Matsumoto), you'd be forgiven for thinking you were talking to an expert on Edo traditions, not a 20-year economics student. However this Rakugo performer has no intention of giving you a history lecture. "When I perform Rakugo, I try to... Well of course I want to make the story fun and enjoyable for the audience. I want people to laugh. But on top of that I want to create an atmosphere. Most of the stories I perform are from the Edo and Meiji era, and I want the audience to experience and feel the atmosphere of those time periods."

Rakugo is generally dated back to the Edo era, and over time has evolved into the minimalist stage setup we see today. It's not simply comedy, like Manzai or stand up, but it's also not just storytelling like Noh theatre. Rather, it's something in the middle. On top of that, it's not just someone trying to memorise a set number of stories by rote. "There are many performers in fact trying to develop a new kind of Rakugo. They make new Rakugo stories, they imitate the traditional stories with settings in the Meiji or Edo era whereas others take place in modern day Tokyo for example." Mangetsu himself is more of a classicist. He has performed one or two modern Rakugo stories, but prefers the Edo era as the setting for his story.

Mangetsu's interest in Rakugo started from an English Rakugo broadcast on NHK radio at the age of ten. Further exposure in high school (also in English) led to him joining his university's Rakugo club (研究会 kenkyukai). He now performs independently, in both English and Japanese. For his English performances however, he will only pick stories that he can translate. "It's very difficult, because most jokes don't make sense when translated. Many jokes rely on wordplay (ダジャレ dajare). You can't translate that, and even if you could, it would be too much of an explanation. That doesn't lead to comedy. That's just a lecture, it's no fun." Once he's done a translation, he "chats" with ChatGPT to help with corrections for what he has translated, a process that has many iterations.

However his story choices aren't just restricted to his English ability. Anything with themes that require a cultural or historical explanation, such as high-ranking courtesans (花魁 oiran) or child apprentices (丁稚 dechi), are out. He may edit or simply not perform stories that contain characters that have a stammer or some degree of blindness, so that no matter who is sitting in the audience, they're not shoved back into the real world. Regardless of language, Mangetsu chooses to perform stories that can be enjoyed by people of all backgrounds.

On top of this, he believes that focusing on the differences and similarities between Japanese and international audiences is the wrong approach: "When I perform in front of the Japanese audience, most people already know the story… [When] I'm performing the story, it's different from other performers, and most Japanese audiences enjoy the difference.... On the other hand, for the international audience, not many of them know Rakugo stories; it's their first time listening to the story, or to Rakugo itself. They enjoy the story itself more. They laugh at key points of the story." The distinction then is between those who know Rakugo and those who don't; those who enjoy the retelling and those who enjoy the story itself. In fact, so long as Mangetsu makes the story understandable, his audiences, who have no lived experience of the Edo or Meiji eras regardless of background, will enjoy it

For those that do know Rakugo (and some will be extremely knowledgeable about the stories he is telling), the tendency is for them to give positive feedback. Sometimes he gets pointers about better expressions here and there, but nothing about our discussion indicates he gets any hassle from monster audience members that know better.

A typical performance would actually involve multiple performers: the first (usually inexperienced) would do a story that everyone knows, the second would do a story that gets everyone's attention (something non-traditional, for example), and the third, having the atmosphere in place, would perform for 30 or even 40 minutes. The first performer has the additional job of reporting who is in the audience - later performers can then adjust what story they perform if need be. "Rakugo is more of a team sport" Mangetsu says, as we continue to talk about comedy's power of breaking taboos. "If you break the atmosphere, such as by breaking a taboo, then you would ruin all the works done by the previous performers." To use the Rakugo stage as a platform of any kind would seemingly require a lot of deliberation beforehand.

For Mangetsu though, what takes precedence is that the illusion and atmosphere are maintained. "If the audience finds something strange, starts thinking 'hmm, that doesn't fit'... they would come back to real life, the illusion would disappear." For this reason, words that don't belong to the Edo or Meiji eras (like やばい yabai) are never present. Mangetsu also doesn't wear glasses during his performances. There were specialist shops in big cities like Osaka and Edo, but glasses were not widely available as they are today. He works hard to maintain the audience's belief, unlike other performers who may actively break the fourth wall.

Overall, he says that he's trying to have fun. "I think the Rakugo professional world is something very different to our society. You have to find your master (師匠 shisho) and become an apprentice, but your future master can always say no to you... It's a very closed community, and that's why I always call myself an amateur Rakugo performer, to make sure I say that I'm not part of that closed society." An attempt at respect, for the traditions and professionals that have come before him.

This doesn't stop him from making the craft his own however. "I try to preserve the story as much as I can. I think that we do not need to change the story if it's not necessary... But I do make some tweaks here and there. Some stories are just not very good, as they rely on expressions that we do not use anymore, or it features things that we do not do anymore in this modern world. Those stories I tweak quite a bit. And that's where my creativity comes up – I try to give the story my own taste and improve the story if necessary." He has his props to aid him in this: a fan (扇子 sensu) and a small towel (手ぬぐい tenugui), as is common in all Rakugo performances. Taking on the role of various items, the fan can for example become chopsticks, whereas the towel can become a coin purse. The only limitation is the imagination. He may use additional items, such as two blocks of wood (拍子木, hyoshigi), which are clapped on a small table to mark scene or mood changes. Mangetsu stresses that these additions however are an exception.

Again, the maintenance of the illusion and the atmosphere informs his approach a lot. "I always have to improvise, because English is not my first language, I might make some mistakes, I might pronounce some words wrong, or use expressions that are weird, and people don't get it, so I have to come up with another expression. If I don't do that, we can't really move on [with the story]." Rakugo is never just about retelling a story, but reading the room at the same time and making changes on the fly. Sometimes this may involve laughing. Rather than a blooper or an act of corpsing, Mangetsu does this on purpose. Whatever helps him keep the fourth wall up.

For a medium devoted to a minimalist approach, it was too tempting not to ask about how rakugo sits in the attention economy. "As I said, these are the only props I use. There aren't many things going on in the background. You really have to concentrate on the story itself, or else you will not know what's happening on stage; it'll just be me talking." The Rakugo storyteller has to work even harder in the 21st century to hold our attention, but Mangetsu partly puts the responsibility on the audience. There's no room for the Rakugo storyteller to repeat themselves, so the audience has no choice but to follow.

This demand for focus in the age of social media has not, however, dented Rakugo's popularity. Rakugo kenkyukai are not confined to universities, and their numbers are increasing. Deaf Rakugo performances occur regularly in big cities; sign language is especially apt for Rakugo when you take into account that storytelling (or RP, roleplay) is an important linguistic concept. Mangetsu also mentioned that international students (in his case, an exchange student from China looking to learn Japanese) are also performing with Rakugo kenkyukai. Sure, people are turning towards Tiktok. There are others though that want to focus on something for 10 or 15 minutes. For this, they can turn to Rakugo.

The tradition of Rakugo is evolving, changing, but it has its place, and it is not going anywhere. And until he is ready to hang up his kimono, neither will Mangetsu.
